This course has been developed for National Health staff and contractors required to perform the duties of a Competent Person (Decontamination) as defined in NHS Guidance. The course enables learners to carry out the recommended daily, weekly and quarterly testing procedures on large porous load sterilizers in accordance with NHS Guidance.

Through a closed book assessment, the learner showed an understanding of the role of sterilization within the decontamination process, the properties of steam to its saturation temperature and pressure, possible hazards associated with large porous load autoclaves, periodic testing to quarterly level and associated records, interpretating test results and certification responsibilities, and the main responsibilities of key personnel.
Through a closed book practical assessment, the learner showed an understanding of standard test pack construction, calibration of a datalogging system and completion of a quarterly test record from data supplied.
